Here is the interlocking brick maker which I bought yesterday! We are hoping to have costs and a few designs for homes by the end of the weekend. What we are planning to do is to employ locals in teams for half days (giving them income and also time to rebuild their own lives). The old mud bricks can be crushed and sifted and reused in making the new cement stabilized clay interlocking bricks, and sold at a cheaper price than the clay fired-bricks (which are very polluting to make).
Housing is one of the most critical needs right now as we move from the rescue and recovery phase of the disaster to reconstruction. Many ideas buzzing around in my head as to how we can do this as cost-effectively as possible without inadvertently creating donor funded future slum areas as so often happens when we go for a quick-fix solution. If we can mobilize the local community to build homes in the Newari/Chhettri style that is in keeping with the beautiful architecture of Nepal, and allow for public green space so lacking in Kathmandu, then hopefully we can build a healthier environment for future generations. Please lets think long-term.
